Myanmar will take back Rohingyas : China

Myanmar has assured China of taking back the Rohingyas sheltered in Cox’s Bazar.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi disclosed this message to Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen during a phone call on Thursday evening.

A foreign ministry press release said this on Friday morning.

Myanmar informed China it was working to take back the Rohingyas as the COVID-19 situation improves, said the foreign ministry press release, quoting the Chinese minister as saying.

Wang Yi told Momen, Myanmar wants to start a new discussion on Rohingya repatriation after the national election in Myanmar, scheduled for November 8.

Myanmar and China are planning to hold foreign minister-level tripartite talks after Myanmar’s national election in November to begin the repatriation of Rohingyas without any delay, he said.

Wang Yi said China has been maintaining regular communication with Myanmar at various levels over the Rohingya repatriation issue.

The Chinese foreign minister also said Myanmar assured China that they will soon start a discussion with Bangladesh over Rohingya repatriation.

He also assured Momen of providing the Chinese vaccine for COVID-19 to Bangladesh on a priority basis and expressed his interest to work with Bangladesh in the post-COVID economic recovery.

Wang Yi lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership in tackling the coronavirus pandemic and promised the continuation of Chinese assistance towards this end.

He also told AK Abdul Momen that the Chinese-funded projects that slowed down due to the pandemic will be sped up soon after the improvement of the COVID-19 situation.
